During COVID-19, Perú had a very strict quarantine where no one could go outside their homes. Everyday for 107 days I ate the same breakfast: two fried eggs with toast on side. With nowhere to go, this mundane process became much more slower and repetitive, leaving sometimes a sense of angst or a sense of hope, depending on little nuances of my day.
In an era defined by the Covid-19 pandemic; tiktokers, foodporn, Instagram filters, Zoom and home office, yoga, confinement, routines and 24/7 livestreaming news, have become the content/essence/subject/matter of contemporary life, that establishes all the intimate aspects of our lives. The artist increasingly faces and reconfigures these issues, incorporating personal approaches of physical and mental health in the identity in their practice.
YOU BETTER KEEP THEM CREATIVE! is a utopia that metabolizes the insatiable hunger of a neoliberal society during lockdown. Through visual stories that become an antidote in times of chaos, a roadmap, a repair and resistance movement, creating new information, new languages and new images to contemplate. The tale of these seven artists is presented as a slow tool, which does not act immediately, but requires experimentation, continuous analysis, deconstruction of stereotypes and thought patterns.
The exhibition sheds a light on a reflection on the possibility of spaces that are still socially unrealizable, creating images of a hopeful or horrible future that may or may not come into existence. These reflections can help us accept the decisions we are making.
2020 showed us that the future is not something we have to anticipate, forecast or control; rather, it is something that we must create and imagine.
- Mariafernanda Marquez, co-curator of exhibition YOU BETTER KEEP THEM CREATIVE!
